Wilder Mann

The "Wilder Mann" at the "Old River Main Bridge" is one of the historical locations of Aschaffenburg. The ground walls now seen at the corner of "Fischergasse" and "Löherstrasse" formed a part of a gastronomic establishment already in the year 1558.

On 1 December 1899 Ferdinand Spahn (great-grandfather of the current owners) bought the "Wilder Mann" from former owner, Kleespieß, in a spontaneous deal. At that time he ran a butcher's shop in the market place in Seligenstadt. As a matter of fact the butcher's shop is currently managed by his successors, the Fecher family, with great success. Upon the failure of his original plan to give the "Wilder Mann" to his eldest daughter, Spahn travelled to Aschaffenburg himself accompanied by his wife and youngest daughter Anna, to take possession of his "hobby-horse". Later, Anna Spahn married Hans Gemeinhardt and she ran the business until the middle of the 20th century. Then, her son Fritz and his wife Klara took over the "House" and they achieved similar business success, moreover, they developed it in several respects. Both of their sons, Paul and Peter, followed the family tradition and stayed in gastronomy. In 1994, however, Paul went his own way, and since then Peter Gemeinhardt and his family have been running the business.

The goal of the successive generations of the family has always been the "House", that has always been famous over the border for the high-standard service it provided. Due to the practically continual construction and renovation, the capacity of the house has always been increasing.

On 1 January 1999 the owners of "Wilder Mann" took over the "Goldener Karpfen" opposite the street, that has been receiving guests here at the Main Bridge since 1602. At the time of the takeover the "Goldener Karpfen" was on the verge of permanent closure threatened by financial problems and mounting investment needs. After the takeover, an elevator was built in the house, and the whole building above the first floor was practically fully rebuilt.

Both buildings have been declared historic monuments and so we operate the oldest preserved catering establishment near and far.
